IPL Laser Hair Removal Explained
Today I’ll if be teaching you about IPL laser or intense pulsed light laser hair removal. There are many different types of lasers in use today. Some are used for skin rejuvenation, some are used for tattoo removal, and some are used for hair removal. It can be difficult to understand the difference between IPL lasers for hair removal, tatoo removal, or skin rejuvenation so today I will explain a little bit about those differences.
IPL Laser as I briefly referred to above stands for intense plulsed light. IPL laser is not actually true laser therapy because IPL lasers emit light over a broad spectrum of wavelengths and true lasers emit light at one particular wavelength. IPL laser treatment is commonly referred to as photo rejuvenation or as a photofacial laser. IPL lasers are commonly used to treat skin blemishes such as age spots, facial telangectasia (broken blood vessels), hyper pigmentation (patches of darker skin than the surrounding skin), age spots, unwanted hair, and sun damage.
IPL lasers work through a process called selective photothermolysis which is sometimes referred to as SPTL. Basically this just means that the light from the IPL laser is converted into heat and it is the heat that is used to treat particular skin conditions or remove hair. IPL lasers bombard the skin with pulses of intense light through specialized filters. The specialized filters are used to control the particular wavelengths of light that the skin absorbs. Because IPL lasers use a wide spectrum of wavelengths, the filters are used gain some control over which wavelengths are actually working on the condition to be treated. Because light is absorbed by darker substances and generally reflected by lighter substances, it is possible through selective photothermolysis to target particular dark spots on the skin while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
The main reason that IPL lasers are popular for a IPL laser hair removal is is because it is much cheaper than traditional laser hair removal. The same factors that contribute to the cost of IPL laser hair removal also contribute to laser hair removal cost but hair removal lasers are more expensive to operate because they only target small areas of hair at once. Due to the nature of the way IPL laser hair removal is done, it is possible to treat a much larger area in a much shorter period of time. This results in a cost savings to both the IPL laser hair removal technician and the client. If you are having a large area of hair removed, such as your legs, if it may be more cost effective for you to have IPL laser treatment than traditional laser hair removal.
IPL laser treatment is used with combined radio frequency (RF) on occasion. According to one Atlanta based dermatologists, Alan M. Gardener, MD, IPL laser treatment when combined with RF which is commonly known as Fotofacial-RF or IPL-RF, results in far superior results for him than IPL laser treatment alone. According to him, his patients who had previously undergone IPL treatment were much more satisfied with the results of Fhotofacial-RF.
It’s much more common for IPL laser treatment to be performed on people for skin conditions than hair removal. It may be a better use of the technology because it is possible to apply greater precision to individual hair follicles with specialize lasers then with broad spectrum light that is produced by IPL lasers. It’s possible to control the wavelength of light that is pulsed onto the skin with filters to some degree but it’s still not as precise as specialized hair removal lasers can be. That’s not to say that IPL hair removal laser is not effective in the right hands.
It’s important that if you choose to go the route of the IPL hair removal laser for your hair removal needs that you go to an experienced technician. Don’t be ashamed to ask some tough questions during your initial IPL laser hair removal consultation. It’s your right and your obligation to ask these questions because ultimately it’s your body that they will be working on. You should ask them how often they perform IPL laser hair removal and what their success rate is. It’s important to understand if they are really experienced or if this is something that they do on very rare occasions. You should also ask them if they are experienced at using IPL lasers on your particular skin coloration. Because darker skin tones absorb more light than lighter skin tones, it may be possible for you to the experience burns on your skin if the person performing the IPL laser treatment is an extremely qualified.
